A very simple 'Following in the Footsteps'?

I used to emulate poets in this way, for the intellectual exercise and to help me with poetic techniques.

Would anyone else like to try?

Following in the Footsteps

The Village School

Ruth Burden

While walking in the country

You may accidentally pass

The Village School where children

Seem silent in their class.

______________________________

The walls are bare and dismal

The Queen’s image grim and plain

Colour only to be found

On the map of England’s gain.

Lice-shaven heads and pigtails.

Barefooted or buttoned shoe.

Petticoats and pinafores,

Well-weathered, nothing new.

In the playground, left briefly

Evidence of childhood’s joys -

A hoop, some skates, spinning-tops.

Simple, but well-loved toys.

You have stumbled magically

through a window to the past

And been privileged to see

Where Present time was cast.

Value such fleeting glimpses,

Recollect dead children’s ways.

See how far that we have come

From long-gone %26#039;Good Old Days%26#039;.

A very simple %26#039;Following in the Footsteps%26#039;?
Shall attempt, after coffee! Good morning!
